Leonard Benson
Melancholy, introspection, sombre interiors are just a few of the trademarks of a Leonard Benson painting and are immediately apparent upon entering the gallery. Coming from a background that did not include any formal art training, but rather the monotony of a 9-5 job, Leonard's dramatic capture of mood and atmosphere is breath taking. Leonard's love of drawing enabled him to devote himself full time to his art and he has been enjoying this freedom for the last ten years, painting impressive works from his studio. He believes "if you want to draw, then just draw".
Leonard's fascination with the female body has been a major focus of this work. His interest in the form takes on many themes of introspection and reflection. He finds the body a vessel for communicating those moments when one is feeling sad, lost or caught in a pause. Also the various ages of the body depict a multitude of shades, emotions, and Benson has often depicted the same woman over a period of time. The use of interiors in the works can be seen as a portrait of the emotion Leonard is depicting on the female form; a mirror reflecting the internal with the external.
Leonard has had numerous exhibitions in and around Hobart over the last ten years; he has been reviewed highly in articles and exhibition commentary. His work has sold locally, nationally and internationally and is highly sought after.
